A. Hurst, Thomas Somerscales - Marine Artist, His Life and Work, Brighton, 1988, illustrated in colour, p. 154, no. 98. ('This magnificent canvas showing, probably, the Clio and three of her consorts, was Somerscales' Royal Academy exhibit of 1900. It is somewhat reminiscent of his first exhibit of all - "Corvette shortening sail to pick up a ship-wrecked crew" - so far as the leading ship is concerned. That was the picture on which his English reputation had been built overnight ... It was long part of the McKelvie Bequest in the Auckland Museum. This museum later sold the picture and, when I finally discovered it, its title had been forgotten.').
Exhibited
London, The Royal Academy, 1900, no. 1042.
