Lot Essay

In February 1790 Thomas Daniell wrote 'Rohtas Ghur is the most considerable hill fort of this part of India, it is naturally of great strength, and the weaker parts have been assisted by very strong works.' (Oriental Scenery, vol. I, no. 5). Rohtasgarh was captured from its Hindu ruler by the Afghan Sher Khan Sur in 1539, and was surrendered to the British in 1764.
