Lot Essay

This view of Bombay is similar to the view by Francis Swaine (fl. 1740-1783) in the Victoria Memorial Collection, Calcutta. The spire of St. Thomas' Church dominates the skyline while the bastion-walls of the Castle are visible in the centre of the picture.

The view of Cannanore on the coast of Kerala, shows the walls of the Thalassery Fort built by the East India Company in the late 17th century. By the 18th century, the British had captured the port's lucrative spice trade.

We are grateful to Charles Greig for identifying both views and to Ian Bouskill, for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
