Lot Essay

The nude figure in the foreground was almost certainly painted from a model in Paris, following Weeks' return to his studio. Weeks' grisaille of this scene, reproduced in his travel chronicles, shows a fully-clothed woman in Indian dress. It is entirely unlikley that Weeks would have had access to nude models in India.

We are grateful for Dr. Ellen K. Morris for her help in cataloguing this picture. She will include this painting in her forthcoming Weeks catalogue raisonné.
