Lot Essay

There are a number of holes and threadbare patches, many of which can be seen in the catalogue photograph. There is also some flaking of the gold pigment and of the gopis and the cows' bodies. The red ground is a richer and darker colour than the catalogue photograph and the gopis' costume is very finely patterned. The gold is a slightly richer tone than the catalogue photograph suggests.
