1921 AIREDALE COMBINATION MOTORCYCLE

Registration No. WT 8049
Frame No. Not Stated
Engine No. T.B.A.

This unique motorcycle and sidecar was built in Keighley, Yorkshire, by two brothers, Arthur and Percy Heaton and was used continuously in their ownership from 1921 to 1961. It was the subject of continual development during this time and has been fitted with various different engines. A 1904 Centaur was the initial choice, but that was soon replaced by a single cylinder 2¾ h.p. Blackburn. It completed many long journeys in the period, including two to London for the Motorcycle show at Olympia. In 1926 a sidecar was added and it was decided that a twin cylinder Blackburn should replace the single, thus improving the power to weight ratio. During the period prior to the War a number of other modifications were carried out by the two brothers including the fitting of a new petrol tank, a new sidecar and the fitting of Webb forks.

The Blackburn engine remained in the frame "until tired and worn" in the early fifties when an American army surplus Harley Davidson unit was fitted in its place.

The vendor purchased this motorcycle in 1968 and was in correspondence with Percy Heaton about the machine in 1972. Included in the file are period photographs of the bike showing the various modifications and a letter from Percy Heaton outlining its history.
