1928 AUSTIN SEVEN FABRIC BODIED SALOON
Registration No. OT 9425
Chassis No. 65362
Engine No. M65757
Black and maroon with black interior. Right hand drive.
The first Austin Seven appeared in 1922, production getting properly under way in 1923. It was built around a very simple triangular A-frame, the radiator being at the apex. Suspension was provided by single transverse semi-elliptic springs at the front, the rear axles being supported by quarter-elliptic springs protruding from the rear end of the chassis members. Although the performance was not stunning it was a sensible and safe car with simple mechanics, and being economical to own and drive it became one of the most popular cars of
its time.
The car on offer is a very original example of a fabric bodied saloon. It was first registered on 31 July 1928 and has the early magneto engine with black painted radiator shell and scuttle-mounted headlights. The fabric on the body is the original, as is the interior leather upholstery. Both are showing signs of age but do not necessarily require replacement. Although never restored, the coachwork appears to be generally sound and the doors open and close well. It is described as running and driving although the exhaust does require some attention. The paintwork is presentable throughout, being finished in maroon and black with maroon wheels, and the car has a fitted petrol can on the offside front wing. This genuine and original Austin 7 was purchased by the current owner in 1964 and the file of history includes log books dating back to 1948.
