The result of the Rolls-Royce takeover of Bentley Motors in 1931 was the announcement of the 3½ litre Bentley, the first Silent Sports Saloon. This was powered by an improved version of the Rolls-Royce 20/25 engine with an overhead valve, crossflow cylinder head and twin carburettors. The cars, having been built at the Derby works, were affectionately known as Derby Bentleys.

By 1936 it was clear that extra power was needed from the engine which was consequently bored out to a capacity of 4¼ litres giving a most satisfactory improvement in performance. The model remained in production for just over three years and 1,241 examples were built.

This very stylish sports saloon by Barker has been in the present ownership for twenty two years. It is finished in two tone red, highlighted with gold coachlines, with grey leather interior and dark red wheels. The interior leather is mostly original and in good condition and the body frame appears to be good and strong. All the instruments are correct and the interior is complete with its period rear picnic tables and Philco radio. Upon inspection it is clear that the car has been re-painted some years ago, and although showing signs of age in places the paintwork is generally presentable throughout. The chrome appears to be in original condition and the car carries a rear mounted spare wheel. Overall, the condition is commensurate with a well maintained, original car.

It retains its original engine and is described as running and driving well, carrying a current MoT certificate, valid until November 1995. It has been used for Continental touring in the hands of the present owner, and has always been maintained and cared for by his full time chauffeur.

This represents an opportunity to purchase a good, original Derby Bentley with extremely attractive coachwork from one of the best known coachbuilders of the period.
