JAGUAR XK140 ROADSTER
Registration No. ASK 319
Chassis No. A810888
Engine No. G1410/1
Black with tan leather upholstery
Engine: six cylinder, in line, twin overhead camshafts, 3,442cc giving 190bhp at 5,500rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent front with double wishbones, longitudinal torsion bars, anti roll-bar, rear semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four-wheel hydraulic drum. Right hand drive.
Following the success of the XK120, the 140 model appeared in 1954 at the London Motor Show. The styling lines were upgraded although retained the family identity; most noticeable were the heavier MkVII-type front and rear bumpers and a more liberal use of chromium plate. The XK140's were heavier than their predecessors but essentially the moving of the engine and gearbox assembly forward by three inches both improved handling and provided greater cockpit space. From the outset the car was available in roadster, coupe and drophead coupe format. A further improvement was the fitting of Alford & Adler rack and pinion steering which now replaced the XK120's recirculating-ball system.
Options available included overdrive and, in some instances, Borg Warner automatic transmission, the latter a concession to the American market. The XK140 proved to be extremely popular and no doubt part of its appeal was its overall value for money. The car remained in production for three years by which time a final derivative XK150 had arrived.
This particular XK140 roadster has been totally restored to the highest order. The work was attested to by Country Classic Cars Limited of Southam and this work included converting to right hand drive, repainting and rustproofing the bodyshell prior to fitting a reconditioned engine, reconditioned gearbox and reconditioned rear axle and differential. This ground-up restoration work amounted to almost ¨52,000 and, naturally, all the running gear was reconditioned at the same time. The car was finished to the vendor's specification and colour and has stunning black paintwork with light tan upholstery and interior trim. The hood is new with new sidescreens. It is in particularly well-kept condition and certainly testimony to the restorers art.
