Louis Renault built his first car in the grounds of his family home in 1898. He soon started to receive orders from his friends for replicas and in March 1899 he set up a company, Renault Freres. By 1912 a labour force of 5,200 had made more than 10,000 cars - one fifth of all French private car production. By 1919 all the four cylinder cars had monoblock engines although they still retained the traditional Renault scuttle mounted radiator, which was to remain a feature until 1928.

This particular car has been in the present ownership since 1988 and is described as being in very good condition. It is finished in dark green with black wings and black interior and has an attractive polished aluminium dashboard. Although not currently registered in the U.K. the documentation with the car includes a Customs and Excise form 386, which states that no duty was payable on the car when purchased from Ireland in 1988. It will be a simple procedure to have a period, non-dating registration number issued for the vehicle, and Christie's would be delighted to assist in this matter if required. The Renault is described by the current owner as running well, although the electrical system is currently disconnected so the lights do not work. An attractive open four seat vintage touring car offered at an affordable price level.
