Lot Essay

These strap-handled vases with their reed-filled and palm-wrapped flutes and serpentine-fluted stems, combine elements from a variety of antique vases and cinerary-urns, such as those popularised by G.B. Piranesi's Vasi, Candelabri etc., Rome, 1778. Such vases reflect the early 19th Century fashion for garnishing the entire house with antique vases that was popularised by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807
