Lot Essay

The table's recess-centred frame is supported on plinth-supported pedestals that evolved from the type of sideboard-table illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, p. XVIII. Its four pilaster feet relate to those of a table-pattern illustrated in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808, p. 85. A pair of related tables, en suite with tall pier-glasses, are likely to have been acquired by Davies Davenport (d. 1837) for the drawing-room of Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire (see: J. Cornforth, 'Caspesthorne Hall', English Interiors, London, 1978, p. 73, fig. 76
