Elvaston Castle, the seat of the Stanhope family from the late 16th Century was remodelled by Robert Walker to the designs of James Wyatt undertaken before the latter's death in 1813. Wyatt did, however, preserve the finest 18th Century rooms, including the staircase hall and saloon, which had been commissioned by William, 2nd Earl of Harrington, and his wife, Lady Caroline Fitzroy, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Grafton, following his succession to the title in 1756
