Lot Essay

These brass-galleried commodes with column-filled corners are designed in the French manner popularised by Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793. A related pattern for a gold-enriched commode with spiral-fluted balusters features in Gillows' 1803 Estimate Sketch Book, no. 1735 (preserved in the Westminster City Library).
A related commode from the collection of Lord Belhaven and Stenton was sold in these Rooms, 8 February 1973, lot 98, while the column pattern featured on a pair of commodes from the collection of the Dowager Lady Camoys, sold in these Rooms, 14 April 1988, lot 76
