AN ENGLISH HANGER with curved single-edged blade double-edged towards the point, the back bordered on each face by a fuller and the forte etched on both sides with foliage, inscriptions and birds (rubbed), struck on one face of the ricasso with a mark, a pair of snuffers in an oval, the iron hilt with large and small trefoil-shaped shell on the outside and inside respectively, small lobated rear quillon, flat knuckle-guard with shaped centre, snouted cap pommel, original wooden grip (wormed) covered with remains of green velvet, and deep iron ferrule, the hilt encrusted in silver throughout with a trellis and dot pattern (rubbed and patinated), circa 1640-50
