Lot Essay

These model that inspired these torch-bearers is likely to have been conceived as part of a mantelpiece garniture celebrating the continent of Africa. It corresponds to a 1799 clock design, with an Atlas-like hunter, that features in a pattern book engraved by De Verberie and Cie. of 47 rue des Fosses du Temple, Paris
