The haraldic peacock, issuing from a Ducal coronet and supported on a garlanded and voluted pedestal, is likely to be that of John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (d. 1857). The doorstop's style harmonises with the 'Old French' style of the Peacock saloon, which his Duchess Elizabeth created in the mid-1820s at Belvoir Castle, Rutland under the direction of Matthew Cotes Wyatt (d. 1862)
