Lot Essay

The fire-basket is supported by vestal-herm figures designed after the Egyptian manner. The vestals relate to those of a tripod pedestal executed in Coade Stone in the 1770s to a design by the architect James Wyatt (d. 1813). Similar stone figures flank a fireplace at Pitzhanger Manor, Ealing and were designed about 1800 by the architect Sir John Soane (d. 1837; see: S. Parissien, Regency Style, London, 1992, p. 142). A similar grate was sold from the collection Edward Medlicott, Esq., Sacombe Park, Hertfordshire, sold Christie's house sale, 11 October 1993, lot 14
