Lot Essay

The Hamilton 'heart-bearing Antelope' crest is painted on golden satinwood medallions inlaid within Grecian-black ribbons; while the hall-chairs' triumphal-arched 'shield' backs are supported on sarcophagus-scrolled plinths, and their compass-fronted seats are supported on Grecian reed-wreathed columnar feet. Their French/antique architecture features in Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793; and these handsome chairs are likely to have been commissioned for Sheephill (later Abbotstown) Co. Dublin by Hans Hamilton of Sheephill (d. 1822) around the time of his appointment in 1803 as High Sheriff.
