Lot Essay

The richly carved trestle-ended table, with its imbricated pillars, reflects the florid gothic or mediaeval manner introduced as the 'New Palace of Westminster' style by the architect A. W. N.Pugin (d. 1852), and featured in his various publications such as Gothic Furniture in the Style of the 15th Century, 1835. Furniture in this style was manufactured by a number of firms such as Gillow & Co., Holland & Son, and Messrs. J. G and J. D. Crace.
