A PAIR OF REGENCY SIMULATED-ROSEWOOD AND PARCEL-GILT BERGERES
Each with a rectangular padded back, sides and seat cushion covered in blue and cream-striped silk, with reeded apron and arm-ends, on ring-turned tapering legs headed by ormolu paterae, on later feet with brass caps and castors (2)

Lot Essay

The bergeres with their palm-flowered Grecian 'cippus' arms, relate to a 'Library Fauteuil' pattern in George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, pl. 48. They also relate to a 'library chair' pattern in the Grecian manner in R. Ackermann's, Repository of Arts, London, 1810 (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p. 51, pl. 15).
