The bust derives from Sir Francis Chantrey's marble bust executed in 1821 for the Duke of Devonshire, and relates to bronze figures executed by the court goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell. For a full discussion, see 'The Chantrey Ledger', The Walpole Society, vol. LVI, 1991/1992, p. 165-166. Another version of this bust, on a gilt-brass socle was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 14 February 1992, lot 1.
