Lot Essay

With its palm-wrapped pillar and 'altar' tripod plinth, it relates to patterns for 'pillar and claw' tables in George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. 69; while its japanned pavilion vignette, in the manner of Chinese mirror paintings, also reflects the fashion for Chinese decorated Drawing Rooms popularised by George Smith.
