Lot Essay

The crest is that of the Case family of Ince and Red Hazels, Lancashire, and Thingwall Hall, near Liverpool.

The 'Case' family armorials are displayed on the sideboard-table's frieze within a palm-flowered bas-relief of Roman acanthus; while its hollowed plinth and paw-footed 'Roman' truss pilasters or 'consoles' are enriched with reeds. Intended to stand before a mirrored window-pier, it relates to patterns for 'Console' and 'Pier' tables issued in George Smith's, Cabinet Maker's Guide, 1826, pls. LXIV and XXVII.
