The name 'Gillow' has been associated with furniture making from the reign of George II and the early 18th century until the later 20th century. However during the last century the name has become increasingly associated with the finest quality antique furniture, as is well demonstrated by items in the present sale such as the Carlton House desk (lot 126), the Nostell bureau cabinet (lot 135) and the Dashwood clothes-press (lot 141). The firm, which was first launched in Lancaster, opened its London branch in the early years of George III's reign, when contemporary fashions were registered by the 3rd and final edition of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1762. However, their Carlton House desk and the medallion-inlaid bureau demonstrate their role in executing the elegant style associated with George, Prince of Wales, later George IV and poplarised by Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. Their robust style and fine figured mahogany of the early nineteenth century is represented by items such as the Egyptian-reeded Dashwood clothes-press. It was at this period that they received mention in Clarke's 1807 Account of Lancaster: 'the town has long been famous for the great quantities of mahogany furniture which have been made in it for home-use and exportation...Mr. Gillow's extensive ware-rooms, stored with every article of useful and ornamental mahogany furniture are well worth the attention of strangers, as they are said to be the best stocked of any in this line out of the metropolis'.
