Lot Essay
A related pattern for a serpentined commode, with rounded corners and bracket feet, featured in W. Ince and J. Mayhew The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762 (pl. XLIII); while its tapered pillars reflect the Pompeian fashion illustrated in a commode pattern in Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, part II, pl. 25). Its handle pattern, with flowered patera, was adopted in the late 1780's by Gillow of London and Lancaster. A related commode was sold from the Estate of Ivor and Anne Massey, Christie's New York, 21 January 1998, lot 426.
