Lot Essay

The dining-room dumb-waiter, with its reed enrichments, vase-turned pillar, and voluted Grecian-scrolled and palm-wrapped 'claw', corresponds to a design, dated 1830 in the Estimate Sketch Book (no. 3962) of Gillow of London and Lancaster executed for a Mr. Bastard. A similar dumb-waiter (height 32 in.) was sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 29 November 1995, lot 172.
