The rounded rectangular twin-flap top with reeded edge, above a mahogany-lined drawer with convex quarter fillets, on turned tapering reeded baluster legs, brass caps and castors, with paper label inscribed in ink 'Jane Countess of Harrington' and with paper label printed and typed 'Bought from the Sale of effects BY ORDER OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THE EARL OF HARRINGTON ELVASTON CASTLE, DERBY, March 18th 1964', inscribed in chalk indistinctly 'Mrs Arb...nall'

Almost certainly supplied to Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington (1753-1829), who married in 1779 Jane Fleming (d.1824), for Elvaston Castle, Derby, and by descent to the
William Stanhope, 11th Earl of Harrington, Elvaston Castle, Derby, sold Henry Spencer and Sons house sale, 18-19 March 1964, lot 589.

Lot Essay

A similar pembroke table with reeded legs was supplied by Gillows in 1813 to William Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton (d. 1850) for Hackwood Park. It was sold by the Executors of the Estate of the 2nd Viscount Camrose, Hackwood Park, Basingstoke, Hampshire, Christie's house sale, 20 April 1998, lot 370.
Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire, the seat of the Stanhope family was remodelled to the designs of James Wyatt before 1813.
