The lacquered and walnut-veneered 'clothes chests' and 'linen chests', which had provided the fashionable furnishing for early eighteenth century bedroom apartments and corridors were replaced during George I's reign by chests of West Indian mahogany. This richly figured chest has an ogival moulded lid, while its large brass escutcheon plate comprises an Ionic scrolled cartouche that was invented around 1720 as a drawer handle. Its scalloped and voluted form is also echoed by the stand's apron lambrequin and the feet of its serpentined 'truss' legs, which typify Dublin manufactures of the period.
