With bobbin-turned moulding overall, the rectangular moulded cornice above a plain frieze and a pair of arched panelled doors enclosing four adjustable shelves above two short and one long drawer, above an ash-lined long drawer, flanked on each side by a conforming panelled door enclosing brass hanging-hooks, above an ash-lined drawer, on a rectangular plinth base, the lower locks stamped 'MACHINE MADE LEVER HOBBS & CO. LONDON'

Lot Essay

Life at Mount Music, Co. Cork, was described in Edith Somerville's novel Mount Music, 1919.
Edith Somerville and Violet Martin were cousins and writers who collaborated on a series of novels and short stories that wittily and sympathetically portrayed Irish society in the late 19th Century. Somerville spent her childhood at the family home, Drishane, Castletownshend, Co. Cork while Martin grew up at Ross House, Co. Galway.
The bobbin-turned moulding is frequently found on furniture made in Cork and given its provenance, it is possible that this piece was also made in Cork.
