A related chess-board 'davenport' desk was commissioned around 1880 by G.N. Gajapathi Rao, Maharajah of Vizagapatam from the 'Ivory Work-Box Dealer' L. Venkatadas. The desk, exhibited at various exhibitions including the Indian Empire Exhibition, London, 1904, bears a card inscribed 'Exhibitor the Rajah G.N. Gajapati Rao Vizagapatam' (A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, p. 216).
