Papier-mâché, a very hard material made of pulped paper, was a medium well known for centuries before it started to be used in conjunction with japanning. This idea was pioneered by the Birmingham based manufacturers John Taylor and John Baskerville from around 1740. This newly established medium emerged with great potential and continued to flourish, reaching its apogee in the 19th Century.
