From the Original Portrait in the Royal Hospital Greenwich by Stephen Pearce, North Magnetic Pole discovered 1st June 1831 - Highest North latitude (82° 44) attained 23rd July 1827 - Highest South latitude (78° 11) attained, 23rd Feb: 1842.'

Stephen Pearce painted two portraits of Ross (National Portrait Gallery and National Maritime Museum, Greenwich). The present mezzotint follows the Greenwich portrait. Pearce produced a number of portraits of Arctic explorers including his famous group portrait of the ten members of the Arctic Council planning the search for Sir John Franklin.
