British Arctic Expedition, 1875-1876
D. MURRAY SMITH. Arctic Expeditions from British and foreign shores from the earliest times to the expedition of 1875-76. Glasgow, Melbourne and Dunedin: M'Gready, Thomson & Niven, 1877. Large 4°, 11¾ x 8¾in. (29.5 x 22.4cm.). Tinted lithographic portrait frontispiece of Sir George Nares, 21 tinted lithographic plates, 2 chromolithographic plates. (Lacking 2 folding maps, L1-4 and two plates with foremargins cut down, 5L3 and 5L4 with repaired marginal tears.) Publisher's morocco, covers elaborately blocked in gilt and blind, gilt edges (neatly rebacked and cornered, resewn, modern endpapers).
As the title suggests, this work covers the history of Arctic exploration from Sebastian Cabot onwards, but its publication was clearly inspired by the high level of interest generated by the Admiralty-backed Nares expedition of 1875-76: Sold not subject to return.
