PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent.

Shackleton and Wilson became good friends at the outset of the Discovery expedition: ''He has quite taken me in his charge,' Wilson wrote in his diary on 19 August, 'and puts me up to endless tricks and does no end of things for me.' In return for this practical help, Wilson now and then saved Shackleton from getting into trouble... Wilson and Shackleton shared a liking for horseplay, but they were drawn together too by mutual literary tastes. Wilson ofter visited the bridge during Shackleton's watch, and Shackleton would recite Browning to him, or read Swinburne.... It became the custom for Shackleton to rouse Wilson in the early hours of the morning to see a particularly spectacular sunrise...' (M. and J. Fisher, Shackleton, London, 1957, pp.27-8.)

Presumably given to Shackleton by 'Billy' on the outward voyage of the Discovery as a souvenir of these 'early hours' spent together.
