[Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)]
Laura BENNETT and Emily Mary DORMAN. The Corona of Royalty. London: James Blackwood & Co., [no date but 1902]. Small 8° bound in 16s (18.2 x 12.2cm.). Half-title. Plates. Original purple cloth, spine titled in gilt, upper cover titled in gilt above gilt blocked crown, the crown with additional contemporary over-painting (spine slightly faded).
PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) (presentation inscription from his future wife, Emily Dorman 'E.H.S./from E.M.D./29th June 1902'), and thence by descent.
RARE WITH AN IMPORTANT PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION. This book, co-authored by the future Lady Shackleton, is her only recorded published work. It deals in some detail with the history, the ceremony, the myths and the legends which surrounded the coronation of monarchs of Great Britain and elsewhere. The date of the presentation suggests that the book was sent by Emily to her fiancé in the Antarctic. If this is the case then it would almost certainly have been delivered to Shackleton by the relief ship S.Y. Morning when she arrived in McMurdo Sound in January 1903.
