The South Polar Times. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1907. Volumes I and II only (of 3), 4° (27.5 x 21.1cm.) Titles in red and black. Plates and illustrations, some chromolithographed, after Edward Wilson and others. (Some leaves in vol.I and II detached.) Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, the upper covers with gilt lettering and rope-work surrounding centrally-placed inset pictorial cloth panels, gilt edges, dust jackets, the two volumes within a single paper-covered card box with paper printed title on lid 'The/South Polar/Times./2 vols.' (spines slightly bumped at head and foot, dust jackets somewhat discoloured and torn with slight loss, the box complete but in four pieces).

A highly important part-set of this cornerstone to any collection of printed works on Antarctic exploration, from the limited edition of 250 copies, these copies numbered 168. The South Polar Times (volumes I and II, as here) was an exact reproduction of the original which appeared month by month during the winters of 1902 and 1903, edited by Shackleton (vol.I) and Louis Bernacchi (vol.II), with articles, stories, poems and drawings supplied by various members of the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904. A third volume, edited by A.G.B Cherry-Garrard, was published in 1914 and included contributions from members of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913. Conrad pp.111 & 121; Spence 1094. (2)
