Details
[Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)]

British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909: W. & A.K. JOHNSTON, Limited (engravers, printers and publishers) South Polar Chart. Edinburgh & London: Johnston, [no date but circa 1909]. Folding coloured lithographic map (49.7 x 37.2cm.), small printed retailer's label ('Sifton, Praed & Co., Ltd.,/Mapsellers,/Booksellers and Stationers,/67 St. James's Street, S.W.') mounted on lower margin.

PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent.

Includes the tracks of 'Recent Expeditions since 1900' and with 'Approximate Route of Lieutenant Shackleton's Expedition' overprinted in red. The use of Shackleton's rank suggests that the map was issued before he received his knighthood in November 1909.

[And:] Seven other maps (an early-20th century 'Map of Archangel & Port specially prepared for R. Martens & Co. Ltd.', and a group of six folding engraved maps backed onto cloth from Sir John Franklin's Narrative of a Second Expedition to the Shores of the Polar Sea [London, 1828]). Provenance: Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent. (8)
