AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. Greely had led a three year official U.S. government expedition to the Arctic, sailing from Newfoundland aboard the 467 ton Proteus in July 1881. Greely helped found the National Geographic Society in 1888 and remained one of its trustees until his death. The half-tone plates are all from Shackleton's Heart of the Antarctic.
