South, The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917. London: The Whitefriars Press Ltd. for William Heinemann, 1921. 8° (18.6 x 12.3cm.). Half-title. Coloured frontispiece, 32 plates, the majority after Frank Hurley or George Marston, folding two-colour map at back, occasional illustrations. Original light blue cloth, covers and spine blocked in dark blue, dust-jacket (small tears to dust jacket with loss of small section at head of upper joint).

PROVENANCE:
Shackleton family, and thence by descent.

A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST 'CHEAP EDITION'. South was first published in November of 1919 in a larger size and with many more plates. For the present edition (the last to be published during his lifetime) Shackleton provided a new preface dated September 1921.
