A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. 'The Expedition, which was led by Dr. G.N. Humphreys and organised by Edward Shackleton [son of Sir Ernest Shackleton], was carried out under the auspices of the Oxford University Exploration Club... They set out on the great adventure in the one hundred ton sealer the Singalhorn. They tried to penetrate the Polar Pack but failed, and had to settle [at Etah] on the exposed and wind-swept coast [of Greenland] which was to be their home for twelve months. During the long darkness of the Winter night they were busy making all things ready for the Spring journeys of exploration. At last, when the first week of April came, three sledge parties set out, each consisting of two white men, three or four Eskimos and their dog teams. The story of these three journeys, each of which would provide material for a separate book, is told with a vividness and simplicity which must enthral all lovers of adventure'.
The expedition discovered and named the British Empire Range of mountains on Ellesmere Island.

[With:] two other copies of the same work, one a duplicate (with ownership inscription dated 'Feb. 1 1937'), the second a fine copy of the American edition, undated but published by Farrar & Rinehart; and an original artist's design for the dustjacket. Provenance: Lord Shackleton, and thence by descent. (4)
