Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922)
Autograph letter signed 'Ernest' to his sister 'My darling Helen', S.S. Flintshire, Astoria, Oregon, 18 November 1897, on japanese 'wood' paper with integral coloured sketch by a Japanese hand, and similar envelope inscribed 'Helen', 2 pages, 8vo; [and] an autograph postcard signed 'Ernest' to his sister 'My dear Amy', Madeira, 18 August 1901, the postcard with a small image of local inhabitants, titled 'Madeira - Costumes populaires', the stamp with 'Funchal Madeira' cancellation.
PROVENANCE:
Helen and Amy Shackleton, and thence by descent to Shackleton's niece, the present owner.
The letter to Helen was sent home by Shackleton during his third voyage (as Second Mate) on the Flintshire to Japan and North America. The postcard was sent from Funchal, the Discovery's first port-of-call on its outward journey in 1901, and so marks the very start of his polar career. (2)
