DOORLY, Gerald S.
The Voyages of the 'Morning'. London: John Murray, 1916. 8° (197 x 125mm.) 22 illustrations on 16 half tone plates, 4 leaves of music, folding map at end. (Title and dedication leaf slightly spotted.) Original blue cloth lettered in yellow and depicting penguins on upper cover (spine faded).
PROVENANCE:
G. & N. Ingleton, Parramatta (bookplate) - W.F. Young (ownership stamp) - Hall's Book Store, Melbourne (bookseller's label) - Ingleton Catalogue no.5764 (stamp at rear).
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Having been employed as a junior officer on a P & O passenger ship used as a floating hospital during the Boer war, Gerald Doorly returned to England in June 1902 to receive Teddy Evans' invitation to join the Morning as third officer. His account of the two voyages made to relieve Scott's expedition is a key historical record, particularly since William Colbeck, captain of the Morning, only contributed a 3-page report in the Geographical Journal of 1904. D.W.H. Walton, in his introduction to the facsimile reprint of 1995, describes the original edition as 'now a very scarce book.'
