The South Polar Times. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1914. Volume III only (of 3), 4° (27.5 x 20.8cm.). Title and text in ochre and blue. Plates and illustrations, some chromolithographed, after Edward Wilson, Herbert Ponting and others. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, the upper cover with gilt lettering and rope-work surrounding centrally-placed inset pictorial cloth panels, gilt edges (some bumping and scuffing to extremities).

PROVENANCE:
Mrs Edward Wilson (Oriana Souper), and thence by descent (pencilled name on pastedown 'Souper') to her great niece, the present owner.

IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY: Fanny Oriana Souper (the great aunt of the present owner of this work) married Edward Wilson on 16 July 1901. The third volume of The South Polar Times was published in a limited edition of 350 copies, this numbered 9. The first two volumes edited by Shackleton and L.C. Bernacchi appeared in 1907 and reproduced work done by members of Scott's first expedition of 1901-1904. The present third volume is an exact reproduction of the periodical, edited by Cherry-Garrard, which was produced by the members of Scott's last expedition, 1910-1913. Conrad p.173; Spence 1094.
