Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967)
Details
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967)
Two typescipts, 'Antarctic Diary 1914-15' and 'Antarctic Diary 1915-16', the first a retrospective narrative of the expedition up to the abandonment of the Endurance, in 9 chapters ('Inception', 'London - Buenos Aires', 'S. Georgia', 'The Pack Ice', 'The Great Ice Barrier - New Land', 'Preparing for Winter', 'Winter', 'The Spring', and 'Good-Bye Endurance'), the latter a transcription of his expedition diary 28 October 1915 - 19 November 1916, respectively 53 pages and 132 pages, 4to, sheep-backed boards, stamped with titles on upper covers (disbound).
PROVENANCE:
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), and thence by descent to the present owners.
The first volume of the two is Macklin's substitute for his original diary of the expedition, lost with the Endurance; it provides a brief but enjoyable summary of the early days of the expedition, with a series of fine descriptions of the joys of his dog-driving apprenticeship (for related manuscripts, see lot 195). The second volume is a transcription of his surviving expedition journal (for which see lot 195). These typescripts, in uniformly-stamped boards, evidently formed Macklin's own formal record of the expedition. (2)
