Shackleton-Rowett Quest Expedition, 1921-1922
A typescript and manuscript 'Memorandum of Agreement' between Ernest Shackleton, Associated Newspapers Limited and Le Matin newspaper of Paris, signed by Alfred Dix and J. Tournal, France, 20 September 1921, 4 pages, folio, granting Le Matin the 'exclusive first serial rights of publication in France in the French language... of all such news cables dispatches and photographs' relating to the 'Shackleton-Rowett' expedition.
An interesting document dated after the Quest left London on 17 September 1921 and shortly before her final departure from Plymouth on 24 September. Shackleton had negotiated an initial agreement with Sir Andrew Caird of Associated Newspapers Limited for the right to publish 'photographs, cable, and articles relating to... [the] expedition' in 1920. Shackleton was on the Quest for her departure from London, but put ashore at Gravesend, and did not rejoin the ship until the 23 September in Plymouth. This document appears to record a last minute effort by him to raise some extra cash by selling the French language rights, with the help of Sir Andrew Caird, to Le Matin for £750. The fact that neither Shackleton nor Caird signed the present document suggests the contract was not finalised.
