This model was apparently taken from a fresco at Herculaneum now in the Museo Nazionale, Naples. Attributed to Filippo Tagliolini and included in the list of models made in the Real Fabbrica from his models between 1796 and 1805 this was first recorded in the Florentine inventory in 1795. It is thought to date from 1790 as at that time the Queen of Naples ordered two series of antique statues and heads from Herculaneum to be made for her in 'biscuit'
