A FINE GEORGE III DIAMOND CORSAGE ORNAMENT

Of girandole design, the central cushion-cut diamond cluster within an openwork foliate and scroll surround with diamond collet detail, suspending three detachable pear-shaped diamond pendant drops, mounted in silver and gold, circa 1800, 7.6cm. wide

Cf. Girandole pendants and earrings became popular in the 17th Century with the appearance of designs by Gilles Legaré. Their popularity lasted throughout the 18th Century, when foils were still used to enhance the appearance of the stones, but the beneficial effects of light playing through diamonds led to an increased use of open-backed settings for these pieces from the mid-1790s.
