A DIAMOND-SET BROOCH BY STERLE
Designed as a radiating stylised sea anemone with diamond star detail to the centre, with French assay marks, circa 1950, 6.5cm. wide
Signed by Sterlé, Paris, No. 4800
The brooch was commissioned from Sterlé by an American sculptor named Mary Callery, well known in France and America in the 1940s to 1970s. She exhibited at Knoedler's and one of her sculptures is centre stage at the Metropolitan Opera. She had the brooch made for her daughter, Caroline Coudert and on her premature death Mary Callery gave the brooch to the current owner in memory of her daughter.
