Lot Essay

The design of the Pantheon in Rome was first used by Schinkel in the reconstruction of the Berlin Cathedral in 1816 and the Nikolai Church, Potsdam in the 1820s. In comparison, King Friedrich Wilhelm III wanted a basilica with a twin-towered facade, but it was not started until after Schinkel's death, under the direction of Ludwig Persius.
